Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea: Hosts secure Champions League spot with resounding victory

Casemiro has scored four Premier League goals this season and set United on their way with the opener

Manchester United secured their Champions League spot with a game to spare thanks to a comfortable victory over dismal Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Casemiro headed the hosts in front, Anthony Martial sweeping past Jadon Sancho’s pass from close range to double the lead.

Bruno Fernandes scored United’s third from the penalty spot after being fouled by Wesley Fofana.

And another mistake by Fofana saw Marcus Rashford score the fourth before João Félix’s late consolation for the Blues, who suffered their eighth defeat in 10 games under Frank Lampard and their 16th overall in a desperate campaign.

The result meant that United consigned old rivals Liverpool to the Europa League next season.

It wasn’t all good news for the home team, as Brazilian winger Antony was carried away on a stretcher in tears after suffering a leg injury in an innocuous challenge with Trevoh Chalobah – with the FA Cup final against Manchester City to come less than two weeks away .

For Chelsea, their dismal season – their worst in almost two decades – cannot end quickly enough, although their fans at least kept their sense of humor as they chanted “we’ve scored a goal” as they celebrated Felix’s goal.

More to follow.
