The streaming party is coming to an end and the streaming hangover is just beginning. Will be . . . painful.
We saw the early stages of this hangover in action. The merger with Time Warner Discovery led to the closure of batgirl film, which will never see the light of day despite being fully finished. shows how Westworld It is raised by wolves were not only cancelled, but removed entirely from HBO Max (now just Max), despite being critical darlings.
Netflix’s long parade of canceled shows is yet another example of streaming’s heyday coming to an end. Netflix may have kept these big-budget shows a few years back. It is now increasingly opting for reality and junk TV, which is cheaper and appeals to the lowest common denominator.
Disney, which is currently in the midst of a $5.5 billion cost-cutting plan, is reeling from streaming losses. The company is laying off 4,000 workers in its second round of layoffs and closing the costly Star Wars: Hotel Galactic Starcruiser Adventure in Orlando. When former CEO Bob Iger returned to replace Bob Chapek in the top job, his mission was clear: It’s time to stop the bleeding.
And there’s blood everywhere thanks to massive streaming spending combined with lost box office revenue during the pandemic, not to mention the demise of the lucrative DVD market. Time Warner Discovery, Paramount, and just about every other streamer and studio are feeling the pinch.
In anticipation of the big Disney+/Hulu merger, Disney decided to curate several shows and movies from those two services. This includes the newly released Willow tree sequel series (which, like I said, were pretty terrible), as well as shows I had on my list to watch, like the charming Mysterious Benedictine Society. I have no idea how I’m going to watch this now unless I eat it all before Friday, May 26th, which doesn’t seem likely! And if I ever wanted to go around the mighty ducks show, well, bad luck I guess.
Perhaps this is all a not-so-gentle reminder that streaming, as convenient as it is, has its downsides. It would always come to that. A wild party of excesses and debauchery has its consequences.
Of course, it’s possible that these titles will return at some point or that Disney will change its mind in the 11th hour and reverse course on some of them, but as it stands now, here’s everything coming out of Disney+ and Hulu this Friday. They aren’t slated to return, and there’s no indication they’ll appear elsewhere, though it’s certainly possible.
